Pensioners who complete Self Assessment tax returns will also need to report the Winter Fuel Payment. HMRC has advised that, for those filing electronically, the payment should appear pre-populated on the 2025 to 2026 tax return, due by 31 January 2027.


If it does not appear, individuals must enter the amount manually. Those using paper returns need to ensure the payment is included by the deadline of 31 October 2026.

Warning about potential scams

HMRC has emphasised that it will not contact pensioners by text or email to request repayment or bank details. Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, stated, 'Criminals are great pretenders and often use fake letters, emails, calls and texts to impersonate HMRC and trick people into giving them money.


' The public is encouraged to verify any such messages and use official channels, such as the GOV UK online tool, for confirmation regarding payment recovery.
