Does This Affect You?
If you've never filed a tax return before but think you might need to this year, this update is worth knowing about.
HMRC has streamlined the sign up process for self-assessment (SA), and it now takes far less time to get set up than it used to.
As of February 2026, around 12 million people were already registered for SA. But more people are being drawn in every year, and one of the biggest reasons right now is interest earned on savings.
If your savings interest goes over £10,000, you're required to register for SA, even if you've never had to file a return before.
HMRC has started acting on this at scale. In March 2026, the department sent notices to around 120,000 individuals, asking them to file SA returns for the 2024/25 tax year, well after the usual deadline of 31 January.
Where HMRC's data shows someone received more than £10,000 in interest but didn't submit a return, they're now automatically registered for SA and sent a notice to file.
If you've had a letter like this and aren't sure where to start, our guide on how HMRC's monthly self-assessment payments work is worth a read.
This was the first time HMRC has used this data at this scale, and it's part of why the registration process needed an upgrade.
