How to Report a Suspicious Message
According to the news report, HMRC asks you to forward suspicious texts to 60599 (charged at your network rate) and suspicious emails to HMRC's phishing team, whose address is listed on GOV.UK. [Editor Note: Unverified figure - check against HMRC guidance] There is also an online service for reporting phone calls you don't think are genuine.
GOV.UK also says you can forward any suspicious text to 7726 for free, which reports it to your mobile provider. You can send suspicious emails to [email protected]. Once you've reported a message, HMRC advises deleting it so you don't click a harmful link by mistake.
If you've lost money, GOV.UK says to contact Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040 if you live in England or Wales. If you live in Scotland, report it to Police Scotland.
HMRC's "Don't Get Caught Out" campaign makes a similar point about tax tips on social media. Some are wrong, too simple or designed to sell you something. Checking GOV.UK first and following a clear guide on how to file your UK tax return helps you get it right first time.
